Let's All Pretend We Are Back To Normal...

Come In, We're Open (And What I've Been Up To) | The Life Of A ...

It's been just over 2 months since the world as we know it here in Vancouver, shut down and I am wondering about the Stage 2 re-opening plan in the hospitality industry. I believe it can happen successfully but only if everyone abides by the new policies. I walked down Denman Street on Victoria Day and was confronted with "summer of 2019". This street is lined with small food establishments with a narrow sidewalk, partially filled with sandwich boards and patio seating, and a busy road with buses speeding by in the curbside lanes. Every open establishment had a lineup to order, and another waiting for orders, making the walking path impossible to take on without rubbing shoulders. Other pubs and restaurants I've seen open in my travels too and from work have patios open with alternating tables closed to permit the physical-distancing needed, although the lineups waiting for a seat were as long as the shopping lineups. Everyone out and about in these places was 35 years old and below, the general age that has continued to not follow the guidelines suggested to the public by the federal, provincial, and local governments.

Image result for fat wallet I am not in that age range, as are my workmates and friends, and I have spent the last 2 months cooking and bartending for myself at home. My wallet has been pretty full through this stint of closures and I kind of like it. I like that I am spending only a third of my money drinking and eating at home. I know when I finally wander down to the pub, I will be sad to see the bill come to me, three times the price of what I was used to drinking at home. Especially when you think of the size of the glass you use at home, that equivalent bill would be huge! The difference is the social aspect. I miss the people working there, the friends I have made sitting around the bar, even the people I'm not particularly fond of. I wonder if going once will fill my boots and I'll go back to staying in, relaxing at home in my own cave. I am not particularly too worried about the safety protocols put in place to ensure the safety of everyone in the pub, but I do wonder how the enforcement will be covered. Have they employed extra security to watch the doors, extra front staff to avoid the movement of chairs, will there be sanitizer everywhere and proper drink service procedures? Or will it be like Denman Street, chaotic and not supervised?

Online Sales Reach a Record High During 2018 Holiday Shopping ...
On that note, normal isn't anything close to what we are used to, in any aspect of life. I didn't know what to do today in the Liquor Store, as I was wearing a mask as suggested by the federal government, but when paying I was wondering if I should remove it so they could visually judge my age. Shopping is definitely not normal as I am always feeling rushed, instead of my normal where I enjoy perusing the aisles without a shopping list, picking up things on a whim. I'm sure this 'normal' is helping me save money but I am not enjoying shopping whatsoever. I have been spending more time clicking through online stores, Facebook Marketplace, and other sites to fill my shopping addiction. I have ordered many items and, of course, I have been equally happy and disappointed in my purchases. The happiness is more of a pleasant surprise like winning small on a scratch-and-win while my disappointment stems from the inability to physically touch the item before purchase. Online shopping has filled my Keno slot, gambling on my purchases - you win some, you lose some!

I think I will give this new normal a little time to settle into it's routine, and allow for the challenges to be solved before sitting next to that carefree Millenial cozying up to the bar. We all want to get out and socialize with our friends, but I think we can do this outside, on the grass or sand in our beautiful 'backyard'. Unfortunately, I have mid-day work shifts for the time being and that puts a wrench in socializing with my friends anyways. I doubt we'd all be meeting up at 9pm so I have a perfect excuse to not be out and about. For me 'normal' can wait.

Christmas Dinner 2023

Christmas dinner is not a challenge for me, unlike most people all over the world. Depending on your main dish selection and the corresponding side dishes, the difficulty level can differ for anyone, but I always suggest keeping it on the simple side so you can spend more time enjoying yourself than living in your kitchen. It was just my partner and me this year, keeping it a bit low-key and quiet. He just started a new job and didn't want to go too crazy, doing a little extra studying during the festive days off. His decision was leg of lamb, which I was happy with as turkey for two is either too much trouble or not special enough if using turkey thighs for your main dish. Using my kitchen and cooking tools (and skills) was a great decision, making our neighbourhood festivities available while also having time to cook. After visiting the local pub and enjoying a few rye and cokes (beer for him) we tried to gather an appetite, filling up on Christmas brunch with my family earlier i...

Heat Waves and Hot Flashes: Mid-Fifties As A Woman

Sitting at the bar I frequent  often, cold pint in front if me, I chose to leave my hot apartment to find some air conditioning. The last few days have been hot in Vancouver and my local has been enjoyable with air conditioning keeping us all from melting away. Walking down here I noticed the temperature was 28c and was looking forward to a little break from the heat. Of course, after a few days of feeling a bit cold in here, the AC is not working. It can be hit and miss as they keep the folding sliding windows open for air flow, but it does end up over taxing the AC system. Sitting on non-cloth seats - it can get a bit sticky in here.  Earlier today I was on a hot bus, of course I catch the bus without AC and I could feel the sweat trickling down my back. Stick to the seat is also a lovely feeling, possibly leaving a small sweat streak, like you would find on seats on workout equipment in a gym. Yuck. The worst part of it all is when you are still suffering from h...

What To Expect When We Are All Free....

It's funny how we all have been reacting to this self-isolation as if we are caged animals, abducted from the wild, pacing in our surroundings, wanting out. We all are stuck in this situation due to a little thing called Covid 19. This novel coronavirus has spread around the world, passing through our breath - well, droplets from our saliva through coughing, sneezing and even breathing. Every country has it currently and Covid 19 has killed thousands of people world wide. In combat of this deadly flu bug, we have been separated from our friends, family and even work-mates in many cases, to avoid passing on the bug. Symptoms don't present at the beginning of the contagion, which is why we could pass it on without even knowing we are infected. Since early March, we have been told by the Chief Medical Officer, to stay inside, self-isolate, stay away from large gatherings and to wash wash wash our hands. Being cooped up in our own personal spaces due to a deadly pandemic o...
