Slowwwwwwwing Dowwwwnnnnnnn.......And Enjoy!

Does anyone have CDs anymore? I was just wondering because I feel like I have been transported back in time on these days of isolation. I am doing things I have never done, like growing food from table scraps. It's amazing how fast a baby bok choy can pop up out of the leftover cuttings when placed in water. I have bok choy and brussel sprout cores in water in a dish on the window sill. I transplanted the 1st baby sprout today to my garden on my balcony with the living lettuce I bought two weeks ago. Hopefully with al the sunshine, we have been getting, these little ones will flourish. On that note I digress like my mind has been without the motivation of work to kick start it. While I am trying to keep busy I have managed to revive my extensive CD collection. I am using music therapy to stay away from the TV as much as possible.

I have noticed everyone is posting pictures of their cooking. It's funny because I used to do it a lot and then just stopped. I guess everyone is missing all of the restaurants they have been enjoying. Watching Netflix cooking shows can make you wanna cook, I agree. It's starting to make me wonder what will happen when all of this is over, and people emerge from their caves with brand new skills they acquired over the "Covid-19 Times". Will they keep cooking, making the industry struggle? I mean humans are generally lazy so, chances are they will return. I wonder if it will be like a diet, where you go on a meal regimen and once it's all over you eat even more and gain double the weight back? Will people shut their home kitchens down again, and only cook for parties and holidays? Will the industry I am in, completely change to a fully different concept, where pick up and delivery rule, and food menu programs dropped at your doorstep, steals the magic of a chefs world? The curtain is up and all the magic has been revealed,  the wizard is just a cook, with some skills easily learned on YouTube. I guess after the smoke has cleared and the 20% of restaurants (my estimate) that survived the virus closures open, there will be room for new chefs to create. Like a burnt forest sprouting new flora through the ashes.

I have been out on my bike ONCE and then managed to hurt that damn thumb of mine trying to change gears. Anyways while I was out I got to see the city in the old way I used to, via mountain bike. I road around the seawall fully to Cambie Street in False Creek. It was a beautiful crisp day, perfect for riding and while I was out it made me remember how I used to ride all over the city-UBC, Granville Island, Stanley Park, East Vancouver. Somehow I slowly stopped in my 30s and now I go out rarely, living right next to or working at the places I would visit. I also didn't have osteoarthritis in my knee at the time, although that is quite the excuse considering my knee was fine on the excursion, the rest of my body was the problem.

The sites were beautiful of course, spring in Vancouver is like a dream when the weather is perfect. Cherry blossoms, magnolias, tulips, daffodils, snowdrops, crocuses, all-out filling gardens and little and big patches of open fields. I haven't seen any bleeding hearts but I'm sure my favourite spring flower will be out soon with my other favourite, columbine. It seems the cherry blossoms which had a horrendous season last year are making up for it this year. The trees are so full of blossoms, it looks like a scene from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and trees full of cotton candy. There are bizarre photo opportunities all over the city with people posing in face masks under the blossoms. I wonder if you can fully enjoy these flowers without being able to smell them.

So, Vancouver is still as beautiful as it always has been, with or without the pandemic threatening the world's population. The beaches may be emptier, the bike paths may be closed, the roads may be closed to the natural beauties of our city. It doesn't mean we all can't get out and enjoy them, at a safe distance. Take pictures to remember this bizarre and special time. Pictures of it all-cooking, cleaning, Zoom parties, gardening, anything you are doing to motivate yourself to get out of bed every day. Remember to enjoy this taste of retirement; our parents, if they are still around, and retired friends, live like this daily, and they haven't ever complained about it. They just wanna go for a walk, or a bike ride, or shopping, like we can, without getting sick.

Christmas Dinner 2023

Christmas dinner is not a challenge for me, unlike most people all over the world. Depending on your main dish selection and the corresponding side dishes, the difficulty level can differ for anyone, but I always suggest keeping it on the simple side so you can spend more time enjoying yourself than living in your kitchen. It was just my partner and me this year, keeping it a bit low-key and quiet. He just started a new job and didn't want to go too crazy, doing a little extra studying during the festive days off. His decision was leg of lamb, which I was happy with as turkey for two is either too much trouble or not special enough if using turkey thighs for your main dish. Using my kitchen and cooking tools (and skills) was a great decision, making our neighbourhood festivities available while also having time to cook. After visiting the local pub and enjoying a few rye and cokes (beer for him) we tried to gather an appetite, filling up on Christmas brunch with my family earlier i...

Heat Waves and Hot Flashes: Mid-Fifties As A Woman

Sitting at the bar I frequent  often, cold pint in front if me, I chose to leave my hot apartment to find some air conditioning. The last few days have been hot in Vancouver and my local has been enjoyable with air conditioning keeping us all from melting away. Walking down here I noticed the temperature was 28c and was looking forward to a little break from the heat. Of course, after a few days of feeling a bit cold in here, the AC is not working. It can be hit and miss as they keep the folding sliding windows open for air flow, but it does end up over taxing the AC system. Sitting on non-cloth seats - it can get a bit sticky in here.  Earlier today I was on a hot bus, of course I catch the bus without AC and I could feel the sweat trickling down my back. Stick to the seat is also a lovely feeling, possibly leaving a small sweat streak, like you would find on seats on workout equipment in a gym. Yuck. The worst part of it all is when you are still suffering from h...

What To Expect When We Are All Free....

It's funny how we all have been reacting to this self-isolation as if we are caged animals, abducted from the wild, pacing in our surroundings, wanting out. We all are stuck in this situation due to a little thing called Covid 19. This novel coronavirus has spread around the world, passing through our breath - well, droplets from our saliva through coughing, sneezing and even breathing. Every country has it currently and Covid 19 has killed thousands of people world wide. In combat of this deadly flu bug, we have been separated from our friends, family and even work-mates in many cases, to avoid passing on the bug. Symptoms don't present at the beginning of the contagion, which is why we could pass it on without even knowing we are infected. Since early March, we have been told by the Chief Medical Officer, to stay inside, self-isolate, stay away from large gatherings and to wash wash wash our hands. Being cooped up in our own personal spaces due to a deadly pandemic o...
